Low energy design
We have extensive experience in conducting energy strategies to reduce building energy demand and to integrate low and zero carbon technologies. At the early stages of a design, we analyse site layout and massing in relation to microclimate conditions to optimise daylighting, natural ventilation and thermal comfort. We can also calculate embodied energy and waste to take whole building impacts into account.
We provide recommendations to optimise building fabric and heating and cooling systems, and we use our detailed knowledge of renewable energy systems to select and design the best solutions to further reduce and offset carbon emissions.
Our consultants have specialist building physics capabilities and use the latest computer simulation packages to balance projects in relation to energy efficiency, thermal comfort and economic viability. We also undertake ventilation, daylighting and CFD studies to support sustainable building design. We can carry out Part L calculations and Energy Performance Certificates to demonstrate energy performance.
With experienced, licensed assessors in Code for Sustainable Homes, Ecohomes and BREEAM, Ramboll can guide development projects from design inception to project completion. We also perform BREEAM International, LEED and Estidama assessments for international project certification.
We have completed sustainability assessments across all sectors, including residential, schools, offices, universities, airports, hotels and healthcare. We work closely with clients and design teams to ensure that optimal credits are targeted and achieved. We also liaise with specialist in-house consultants and design team members to ensure that all the sustainability aspects of a development are fully considered. This has enabled projects to achieve high standards of sustainability, recognised by certification to BREEAM Outstanding and Code for Sustainable Homes Level 5.
Energy use in existing buildings
With tighter legislation, the introduction of the Carbon Reduction Commitment and rising energy costs, it has never been more important to consider optimising business energy use in existing buildings.
Ramboll is fully accredited to perform energy audits for large businesses in the UK, with either full or partial funding as part of the government's Carbon Trust Programme, or as bespoke audits. It is not unreasonable to expect at least 20% energy savings from low/no cost measures identified in an initial audit. We also undertake air conditioning inspections to identify potential efficiency savings.
We are fully accredited to provide Level 3-5 Energy Performance Certificates, and can produce competitive solutions for projects small and large, using simple and complex modelling tools. Ramboll is also accredited to provide Display Energy Certificates. As building services engineers, we can use our depth of experience to ensure the best possible EPC/DEC Asset Rating is achieved.
Consistently increasing energy costs make it important that energy is purchased at competitive rates. We offer energy procurement advice and can act on a client's behalf for the competitive tendering of gas/electricity contracts across all main suppliers to achieve the lowest possible rate. We undertake installation management of metering for monitoring, tenant allocation and/or Carbon Reduction Commitment early-action metric purposes — we have extensive experience in sub metering and automatic metering (AMR).
Ramboll's sustainability consultants undertake the development of clear sustainability strategies and the monitoring of progress within an overall masterplan. We develop strategies through the analysis of relevant policies, site constraints and opportunities, and client aspirations. This results in a range of sustainability objectives for many aspects of a masterplan, including energy, ecology, water, materials, transport, waste, pollution, and health and wellbeing. We often conduct specialist studies that contribute to this process.
