Public & Government

Our experience in the design of public buildings includes new-build and refurbishment schemes for many different end uses. They require a deep understanding of the requirements of the professionals who use them, the needs of the public who visit them and the societies they serve.

British Embassy, Sana'a

We were lead consultants for a project to construct new British Embassy and consular offices in Sana'a, Yemen. The competition-winning design is a two storey reinforced concrete building housing 1,000 sq m of office space. It stands in landscaped gardens that are irrigated in part by rainwater harvested from the flat roof.

The building's thermal mass is part of an integrated services strategy that includes passive cooling systems. A canopy overhang and brise soleil further mitigate solar gain.

We provided in-house expertise for a wide range of specialist aspects: our geotechnical engineers contributed to the development of seismic-resistant features and our fire engineering team advised on compartmentation and fire-fighting methods.

By providing an integr ...

Palace of Westminster settlement remediation

Westminster Hall in the Palace of Westminster was founded in 1097, though only sections of masonry remain from this date. Its spectacular hammer beam roof — which dates from 1402 — is thought to be the best example in Europe, and the whole building is Grade 1 listed and part of the Westminster UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Hall's grand southern steps and some areas of floor had suffered from considerable ongoing settlement and our specialists were appointed to investigate the causes, consider repair options and recommend remedial measures.

Working closely with the Parliamentary Works Directorate, the Palace's conservation architect and English Heritage to ensure that all work followed best conservation practice, we took the role of lead consultant. Non-destructive surveys, inc ...

Swiss Cottage Library refurbishment

Basil Spence's building is a distinctive landmark, with its elliptical contour and concrete fins ranked across the curved facade.

When we were called as consultants, the four-storey structure was in urgent need of refurbishment. Serious subsidence at the south end had been caused by the spread of tree roots through the clay soil. Moreover, changing standards meant that the original interior layout seemed cramped and dark. The challenge was to balance the building's historic value with the needs of a modern library.

To combat the effects of subsidence, we opted for new piled foundations, working with care to avoid damage to protected trees. Floors were then re-levelled and rebuilt.

An extensive consultation process resulted in the construction of a welcomi ...

British Embassy, Tbilisi

New secure premises were urgently needed for the British Embassy in Georgia as it was housed in a hotel in the centre of Tbilisi. Our building services engineers collaborated with Wilford Schupp Architects on a competition entry concept design for a new embassy and ambassador’s residence. Ramboll was subsequently appointed to undertake the detailed design for all building services.

Located on the outskirts of the city, the site was formerly occupied by a hospital, and a gas main and water pipes had to be relocated. Major earthworks allow the 1,600 sq m building complex — a stacked basalt stone plinth structure — to sit firmly in the steep slope with a 30m bomb-blast security perimeter. Unusually, the 250 sq m official residence is located above the embassy, with access to the t ...

British Pavillion, Shanghai Expo

UK Pavilion for Shanghai World Expo fire engineering

The intriguing and popular British Pavilion for Expo 2010 Shanghai was designed by Heatherwick Studio, winners of the 2007 design competition. More than 200 countries are taking part in the Expo, the theme for which is "Better City, Better Life"...
