Buildings physics and material technology

Ramboll’s Building Physics team provide specialist skills that enhance the performance of buildings, ensuring sustainability and maximum occupant comfort. At Ramboll we use simulation programs early in the design phase to produce virtual prototypes of the proposed options, allowing clients, designers and end users to make informed decisions.

Holistic analysis

A thorough understanding of the science of buildings enables our team to analyse all aspects of the building — from natural light to the flow of heat and air. We take an active role in optimising indoor climate,
sunlight and daylight, thermal comfort, energy consumption and carbon emissions in the built environment.

We undertake feasibility studies to predict a building’s energy profile and advise on strategies to reduce energy demand and integrate low and zero carbon technologies. We work with architects to make best use of lighting and natural ventilation. We interact with building services engineers to optimise systems and controls.

We deliver solutions that balance compliance with planning policies, building regulations and legislation. We provide effective, practical, technical and financially viable solutions.

Our services include:

  • Thermal dynamic simulation
  • Daylighting and glare analysis
  • Solar shading analysis
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to appraise heat, air and smoke movement
  • Energy analysis to assess carbon reduction strategies, feasibility of renewable technologies and operational performance
  • Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) and Display Energy Certificates (DECs)
  • Energy audits and post-occupancy evaluations

Building Physics in action

Working with Kingfisher, we provided design options for lowering the carbon footprint of retail outlets across Europe, Middle East and Asia. Ramboll produced a suite of tools, including a Sustainable Property Roadmap and an online visualisation system for evaluating options.

At Lawrence Hall, the Royal Horticultural Society’s Grade II listed building in London, we used laser aided survey scanning, IES Virtual Environment and CFD to analyse its internal environment.
Retrofit for the Future delivers significant carbon emission cuts in the UK’s existing housing stock. Ramboll developed a whole-house retrofit solution for a north London property.

We also virtually prototyped design options for the air traffic control tower at London’s Heathrow.
