Four Lane Patna-Bakhtiyarpur Section of NH-30

The 50.7 km long four lane highway from Patna to Bakhtiyarpur in Bihar includes one major bridge, 11 minor bridges, two road-over-bridges, three grade separators, six pedestrian underpass and 61 culverts.

Extensive work around the M25 motorway

Ramboll has worked extensively on the M25, including widening of several sections including the J12-15 and T5 spur and J27-30, and was lead engineer for the landmark Cobham Motorway Service Area between J9 and J10.

Bulford Road - Johnston to Tiers Cross road improvement scheme

Before its upgrade, Bulford Road was a single-track road with passing places, which served nationally important energy sites and other developments in the vicinity of the Milford Haven waterway. This improvement scheme has transformed 2.7km into a road with safe walking and cycling paths linking the communities of Tiers Cross and Johnston.

Six Lane Indore-Dewas Section of NH-3

Ramboll provided post bid detailed engineering services for the six lane Indore-Dewas section of National Highway-3 in Madhya Pradesh

Six-Lane Greenfield Agra-Lucknow Expressway, India

Regarded as India’s longest greenfield expressway, the Agra-Lucknow expressway will minimise travel time between major cities in Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states.  

Ariadne Building and Piazza

Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth is a mixed use redevelopment of a major former Royal Navy site on the waterfront. Our engineers worked on the Ariadne Building and the piazza that it faces — both part of the northern commercial development of the site. Previously, we had provided structural and civil engineering services for the southern part of the site, where 300 new houses and apartments have been constructed.The Ariadne Building is a four storey steel frame hotel and retail complex. It forms an integral part of the Gunwharf Quays development and faces the head of a canal in Portsmouth Harbour. Design & Build contract for 9 hardstands

The Abu Dhabi International Airport (ADIA) is undergoing a major programme of expansion under the management of Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC). As part of this expansion ADAC requires 9 Code E Hardstands to be constructed to provide relief aircraft parking until opening of the new Midfield Terminal Building in 2017.

Flintshire Bridge - Gateway to Wales

Flintshire Bridge carries the A548 over the River Dee in North Wales, UK. The design proposed by our bridge engineers was selected through competition for its aesthetic appeal and economic viability.

M25 DBFO widening J27-30, one of the fastest highway construction programmes

Section 4 of the M25 DBFO involved widening 25.8 km of dual 3-lane motorway to dual 4-lanes within the existing highway boundary, whist maintaining dual 3-lane operation. Design included upgraded junctions, controlled motorway infrastructure and overall improvements to the environmental, operational safety and maintenance provisions of the motorway.

Abu Dhabi Airport Expansion

Part of a $6.8bn expansion programme to increase capacity from 3.5 to 20 million passengers by 2011.

Nørreport Traffic

This project consists of a detailed road and traffic management design, for a new traffic solution at Nørreport Station - including a new bus station.

A477 St Clears to Red Roses road improvement scheme

The A477 road forms part of the Trans European Road Network (TERN), a strategic route linking mainland Europe with West Wales and Ireland. Ramboll was appointed transport and environmental consultant in an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) form of contract to design and deliver a £47m improvement scheme.

Ramboll. The final beams being lifted into place by overhead cranes at 3am with the M4 closed to traffic. The steelwork erection took place over four nights and was challenging because of high winds and rain. 4 December 2015

Shinfield Eastern Relief Road, M4 overbridge

Shinfield Eastern Relief Road (ERR) forms part of a scheme that will relieve congestion in the village of Shinfield in Berkshire, and also provide access to land for development of new housing and a science park for the University of Reading.

Ramboll. Our Gantry Generation Solution (GGS) automates gantry design and modelling. It is a constantly evolving system that reduces complexity in gantry model creation whilst addressing current and emerging client requirements.

Gantry product design for smart motorways

Innovation in digital gantry design has been pivotal in the development of Highways England’s Smart Motorway Programme (SMP). Ramboll provided the step change needed to deliver the quantity and quality required through automating the design process.

Gibraltar Airport runway re-surfacing and AGL upgrade works

When Gibraltar's airfield approached its due date for major planned refurbishment works and upgrade, Ramboll was appointed to provide management, technical and financial services to the project, which was the first full runway re-surfacing in 20 years.

A380 South Devon Highway

The South Devon Link Road Project was one of the biggest construction projects and one of the most complex highways schemes in the South West. Involving many partners and engineering challenges, the project has received awards for considerate practices that show respect to the community and the environment.

A487 Bangor to Fishguard Trunk Road Improvement at Glandyfi

Glandyfi Junction on the A487 coastal trunk road runs through one of Wales’ most scenic areas, but its narrow bends made it a notorious bottleneck and accident blackspot. This improvement scheme involved widening and straightening a 1.3km stretch of the road beside the Afon Dyfi estuary, close to the Snowdonia National Park.

Hammersmith Flyover - Phase 2 refurbishment and strengthening (HFO2)

Phase 2 strengthening of the Hammersmith Flyover (HFO2), was a phenomenally complex £100m programme including innovative engineering solutions to install a full new prestress without removing the original. With 70,000 users every day on a key strategic route into London, the structure, which had been deteriorating due to significant corrosion, presented many technical, logistical, programme and political challenges.

Gibraltar Access Road and Tunnel

Ramboll produced an outline strategic brief to improve access between the city centre and airport, adjacent to the frontier with Spain. The objective, to provide for a free flow of traffic; currently interrupted by airfield operations where 600m of existing road crosses the runway.

M40 motorway services area

We are providing structural, infrastructure and building services engineering design for a new motorway services area on the M40 at Beaconsfield. The development incudes a petrol station, an amenities building and overnight accommodation.The site covers 6.4 hectares and is located in an environmentally sensitive area. It is surrounded by ancient woodland and near various significant structures, including a Roman road and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. M25 motorway J12-15 widening and T5 spur road

To the west of London, a 12km stretch of the M25 — the busiest motorway in Europe — has been widened to relieve traffic pressure. A new spur road was also needed to facilitate the exchange of traffic in and out of Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5. In a joint venture with engineers WSP, our transport specialists developed the concept designs and worked with Balfour Beatty to implement the widening and spur road projects as part of a design & build contract.

Maintenance of the Limfjord Immersed Road Tunnel

Ramboll was chosen to undertake overall repairs on the Limfjorden immersed highway tunnel, which has a total length of 550 meters.

Limerick PPP Scheme

The Limerick PPP Scheme (Public Private Partnership) includes a fourth crossing of the River Shannon linking the northern bank with the southern bank at Bunlicky Lake.

A23/A232 Fiveways Croydon - Stage 3 - Concept Design

The ‘Fiveways’ scheme in Croydon aims to tackle congestion at the A23/A232 junction and surrounding network, improving it for all road users. It includes the Purley Way interchange, Fiveways Corner junction, and Waddon Station Bridge, and is important for the borough’s economic growth.

A31 Magherafelt bypass between Castledawson and Moneymore

The new bypass on the A31 loops around the town of Magherafelt in Northern Ireland, and is expected to ease congestion in the town by as many as 50,000 vehicles a week, reducing journey times on a major route. Ramboll contributed highway, structures and geotechnical design, environmental co-ordination (including landscape design and assessment of alternative designs) and site supervision.

St David's 2

The largest city-centre regeneration to ever take place in Wales, St David's 2 Cardiff is a mixed-use development that includes over 100 new retail outlets, 300 luxury apartments and parking for 3,000 cars, spread across a site footprint that is roughly the size of eight football pitches.Ramboll UK took on this job as a design and build contract after it had already reached Stage D. Södra Länken

The aim of the project was to design a road traffic tunnel system at Stockholm’s southern suburbs in order to reduce traffic congestion, direct traffic around Stockholm and enhance environmental condition.

E18 Bommestad - Sky, European Highway

In the spring of 2005, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration began working on plans to replace a 6.4km long section of the E18 motorway between Bommestad and Sky in Norway. The motorway was constructed in 1970 and was no longer able to meet the requirements of the ever increasing road traffic. The plans involved constructing a four-lane motorway along the E18 past Larvik.

M1 motorway widening (J25-28). The project involved design of modifications to over 44 other existing structures including demolition and replacement of one overbridge and widening to two railway underbridges.

Involving the upgrade of the motorway network through widening of existing three lane carriageway to four lanes over a length of 25km, this Highways Agency Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract was the first where the target cost came in below scheme budget. It is also notable for being the first UK motorway widening scheme to be constructed using a moveable steel barrier traffic management system instead of a contra flow.

Design and supervision of the Lusaka - Mongu road redevelopment

The road from Lusaka to Mongu is a vital connection to the western part of Zambia as well as to the Angolan border.  The redevelopment of the road has led to considerable savings in time and transport costs.

Tunbridge Wells Hospital

Construction of the Tunbridge Wells Hospital in Pembury made possible the consolidation of Pembury and Kent & Sussex Hospitals into one single location. Built on the site of Pembury hospital, it includes 512 bedrooms and was the first NHS acute hospital in Britain to have single room wards.

Norra Länken

To reduce congestion and to minimise the heavy traffic in the centre of Stockholm, it was decided to build the Norra länken: a five kilometre road around part of the centre of Stockholm, three kilometres of which will be in tunnels.

The Queensferry Crossing sits within a beautiful bridge-scape representing three centuries of bridge innovation. It is the UK’s tallest bridge and the world’s longest three-tower, cable-stayed bridge.

Lights on at new large Baltic port

The Port of Helsinki officially opened the new cargo port at Vuosaari, Helsinki on 28 November 2008, which Ramboll helped realise. Finland’s new main port offers efficient transport with frequent shipping services to Central European ports as well as direct connections to the entire Finnish main road and railway network.

Power Road Bridge Replacement

TfL is replacing the three span Power Road Bridge, which carries the A406 North Circular Road (Gunnersbury Avenue) over two Network Rail lines. This complex project involves diversion of utilities onto a new service bridge, and highway bridge deck demolition and replacement works without the need for road closure.

TfL Structures and Tunnels Investment Portfolio (STIP)

The London 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games was Britain's largest peacetime logistical exercise and a major challenge for Transport for London (TfL). London's road network had suffered decades of under-investment preceding TfL’s ownership, and the highest priority structures had to be in a state of good repair before the Games began.

Warrington Centre Park Link

The Centre Park Link is a highways scheme designed to relieve traffic congestion and increase the attractiveness of Warrington as a place to live. As ECI design consultants, Ramboll undertook detailed design to BIM Level 2 compliance.

Highbury Corner Bridge STIP

Highbury Corner bridge in central London was one of the eight highest priority structures on Transport for London’s (TfL) road network that were identified as needing intervention and investment. It had to be replaced to reduce the need for disruptive emergency closures in the future. Despite unusual complexities and constraints, full deck replacement took place with only a 20-day road closure and a 195hr rail possession.

E18 motorway extension from Koskenkylä to Kotka in Finland

Within Finland, Sweden and Norway in particular, Ramboll has been extensively involved in the establishment of the Nordic Triangle transport corridor, part of EU’s TEN-T road network, linking this region closer to the rest of Europe and beyond. As a part of the Nordic Triangle transport corridor, the E18 stretches all the way across southern Finland from Turku via the Helsinki metropolitan area to Vaalimaa at the Russian border providing a fast route to Eastern markets. Leading the consulting consortium in charge of construction design, Ramboll plays a central role in the E18 motorway extension from Koskenkylä to Kotka.

Akbulak Club Resort

Akbulak Club Resort is a luxury leisure complex resort located in the south east of Kazakhstan, approximately 50km east of the former capital Almaty. The proposed development is laid over 980 hectares on a greenfield site, located at the foothills of the Tian Shan mountain range, which separates Kazakhstan and China. Assessments, provided by Ramboll, included information that could be used to forecast costs, enabling our client to consider possible phasing options.

Paving the way – from pollution to sustainable recycling of oil shale ash

The purpose of this project is to show that it is possible to convert deposited and newly generated Oil Shale Ash (OSA) into valuable secondary materials for civil-engineering applications. This efficient and waste-free use of oil shale would reduce its impact on the environment while also generating economic benefits.

A605 Kings Dyke Improvement Scheme

The problem of road congestion on the A605 road, resulting from increased rail traffic through the Kings Dyke level crossing, needed an ambitious diversion scheme that involved a new road and bridge, rail works, ground works and landscaping.

Track upgrade

The line between Aarhus and Hobro in Jutland, Denmark is being upgraded in preparation for high speed trains. This will help reduce travel time between Aalborg in the country’s north and Aarhus to one hour.

Intercity Sørli-Hamar-Lillehammer

In order to improve the connection between Sørli and Lillehammer in Norway, Ramboll is planning a new 70-kilometre double track railway line.

Holmestrand - The world’s first mountain railway station

A new fourteen kilometers double track through the city of Holmestrand will greatly improve the rail services on the Vestfold line. Rambøll is responsible for the design of seven kilometers of the line and Holmestrand Statio

E18 Grimstad - Kristiansand, European Highway

Ramboll was engaged as the main consultant on the stretch of the new E18 motorway between Grimstad and Kristiansand. The new motorway will significantly improve the Norwegian infrastructure and will improve living conditions for local communities living along the existing road.

Tunnel under Marselis Boulevard

The project consists of a 1.8 kilometre cut and cover tunnel, consisting of mechanical and electrical  installations, several road and railway bridges (including railway bridges at Langenæs, Åhavevej and Viby Ringgade), and all temporary structures.

The Mersey Gateway

It is a new six-lane cable-stayed tolled bridge across the Mersey Estuary between Runcorn and Widnes. The central feature of the significant highway improvements between the M56 and Speke Road. 

Upgrading of the Ringsted-Fehmarn Railway Line

As part of the Fehmarn Belt tunnel project, the 110 km railway line between Ringsted and the Fehmarn-link in Rødby will undergo a comprehensive upgrade. The project includes raising the speed limit to 200 km/h and expansion from single to double track between Vordingborg and Rødby. Existing railway stations will be rebuilt and a new station will be built in Holeby. All of this in order to ensure a quick and efficient transportation of cargo and passengers to Germany.

The Øresund Link

The Øresund Link connects the Danish capital Copenhagen with the city of Malmö in southern Sweden by a four lane motorway and a two track electrified railway for high speed (200 km/h) passenger services as well as freight trains.

Carlsberg City

Site 8 is the first major building of the Carlsberg city development complex in central Copenhagen. The complex is more than 100, 000 sq m and combines the teaching facilities of the UCC university with retail, office and residential uses. The area will be active 24/7 and will engage with in excess of 10,000 students per day creating a vibrant and active study environment.

Fehmarnbelt between Denmark and Germany

In the future Scandinavia and the rest of Europe will be connected by the world's longest road and rail tunnel.

Nordhavnsvej – the largest road construction project in Copenhagen in 50 years

The project for “Nordhavnsvej” is the first stage of a new road to Copenhagen’s Nordhavn (North Harbour). When fully developed, the urban area is planned for 40,000 residents and 40,000 workplaces.
