Environmental & Social Impact Assessment for TOTAL
In the frame of shale gas exploration in Europe, TOTAL E&P Denmark B.V., a subsidiary of Total S.A., in association with Nordsøfonden, the Danish State Oil and Gas Company, obtained two licenses in 2010 to explore possible shale gas reserves in Denmark, one in North Jutland and one in North Sealand. Being the first licenses of its kind in Denmark, the project has attracted substantial attention due to the implied environmental risks associated with this type of exploration, not least in relation to groundwater protection.
New backbone for mobility in Copenhagen – EIA of Denmark's largest light rail development
The proposed 27 km Ring 3 Light Rail system will create a new backbone for mobility and public transport in suburban Copenhagen and will include 27 stations passing through 11 municipalities along the existing ring road 3. Ramboll is undertaking a comprehensive EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) by assessing the impacts of the rail system on nature, noise, traffic, buildings and wastewater. Being a key part already in the development and design phase of the project is a very good opportunity for the EIA team to influence the technical design in order to minimise environmental impacts during construction and operation. The light rail system in itself is a step in the right direction in terms of lowering CO2 emissions.
Restoration of two bogs at Elsinore, Denmark
The two bog areas of Tinkerup Mose and Multebærmosen are both protected natural areas in the Municipality of Elsinore - they lie within the National Park of Northern Zealand. In the 19th century this landscape consisted of a large, expansive area of peat consisting of poor fenland, raised bogs and numerous small bogs where peat had been excavated.
Nature restoration for Houting - an endangered fish species
The houting - a salmonid fish- is close to becoming extinct in Denmark and is included on the EU's list of endangered species. Denmark has received eight million EUR from the EU LIFE scheme to support the protection of the houting.

The masterplan includes a new pedestrian bridge providing direct access to the city centre from the Barrack Street site. Various constraints and statutory requirements necessitated extensive liaison with Norwich Council and the Broads Authority to deliver a satisfactory design. Spanning a narrow 30m section of the Wensum, the deck needs to sit 2.9m above the water level to allow river traffic to pass unhindered. Cathedral Bridge
The foot and cycle bridge over the River Derwent in Derby is a competition-winning design and is unique in the UK as a variation on the cable-stayed swing bridge form. A 38m main span and an 18m kinked backspan are supported by three prestressed cables carrying load back to a 20m high raked mast. The design of the backspan was dictated by the site: it crosses a mill race, reinterpreted as a dynamic piece of public art, enabling access to the riverside walkway whether the bridge is open or closed. .

Zollhallen Plaza
Zollhallen Plaza is a new counterpart for the historic customs hall which was restored in 2009. The plaza is a fine example of water sensitive urban design, as it is disconnected from the sewer system. Beautiful planters provide infiltration points, and subsurface gravel trenches with innovative in-built filter medium reduce the hydraulic overload on the sewer system. Indented plaza areas create a surface flood zone. No rain water is fed to the sewer system, instead the ground water table is recharged.

Tithebarn city centre regeneration
We are working on various aspects of the new masterplan for the city centre of Preston, Lancashire. The area concerned is known as Heart of the Tithebarn Regeneration Area (HTRA) and covers approximately 14.8 hectares. The masterplan provides for 32 new-build blocks, the refurbishment of existing structures, relocation of the bus station and a considerable area of new retail space, leisure facilities, public spaces and car parking.Among the key environmental aspects considered during the evolution of the scheme have been land quality, archaeology, ecology (there are bats on the site), noise impacts, air quality, microclimate, drainage, townscape, visual context and waste management. Impact on the local economy and social structure have also been studied.Our consultants undertook preliminary microclimate analysis of daylight, sunlight and wind flow on the development site and the surrounding area. The objective of the wind flow analysis was to ensure that the proposals offered a year-round comfortable external environment.Our infrastructure engineers have completed an extensive 3D earthworks model of the proposed new bus station area that optimises the cut and fill volumes. A comprehensive drainage strategy has been developed that minimises the need for sewer diversion. The surface water strategy endorses the use of Sustainable Drainages Systems (SUDS) and includes rainwater harvesting, porous paving and the extensive use of green/brown roofs.
