Tintagel clifftop footbridge – Foundations

Marine acoustic investigations for crossing Tromsø-Kvaløya
Ramboll maps ground conditions with marine acoustics for Statens Vegvesen as part of placement study for Fv862 new crossing Tromsø-Kvaløya, in northern Norway. Almost 90 km of profile is collected and interpreted and 9 different survey areas are investigated.
New Fairway, Vordingborg - Planning and design
Ramboll has performed a project for a 1300 meter long new fairway at Masnedø Østflak south-east of Vordingborg. The project included all relevant studies, including geotechnical, geophysical and environmental studies as well as studies of the navigational safety.
Bulford Road - Johnston to Tiers Cross road improvement scheme
Before its upgrade, Bulford Road was a single-track road with passing places, which served nationally important energy sites and other developments in the vicinity of the Milford Haven waterway. This improvement scheme has transformed 2.7km into a road with safe walking and cycling paths linking the communities of Tiers Cross and Johnston.
Assessing the Environmental Impact of Norway's Largest Dredging Project
Norway's largest dredging project to date is underway, enabling large 'Panamax' ships of 70,000 deadweight tonnes to enter the port of Fredrikstad by 2015. The Norwegian Coastal Administration (NCA) has asked Ramboll to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the impact that the work will have on local biodiversity.
DCT Gdansk - Container Terminal Expansion - Conceptual Planning and Design
The planning and conceptual design comprised the planned stage called “West option”, including a new approx. 650 m. long “deep water quay” and approx. 32 hectares of storage area in the hinterland.

Battleship "Murmansk" - Technical evaluation of breakwaters and retaining walls for the salvage of the battleship
The sunken Russian battleship "Murmansk" in Sørvær in northern Norway has been attempted salvaged. Norwegian contractor AF Decom was in 2009 given the contract to dismantle and remove the 211 m long warship with a dead weight of around 17.000 tons.
Six-Lane Greenfield Agra-Lucknow Expressway, India
Regarded as India’s longest greenfield expressway, the Agra-Lucknow expressway will minimise travel time between major cities in Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states.
Herne Hill Velodrome

Metro extension, Sweden
A new metro line in the suburbs of Stockholm is designed to ease road congestion and is part of one of the city’s most important community development projects instigated by the City Council.
Feasibility study for a new major seaport in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka Ports Authorities (SLPA) is planning to develop a new major greenfield seaport in Hambantota, situated on the south coast of Sri Lanka. Hambantota Port is expected to relieve Colombo Port and is intended to support the growing demand for servicing large vessels.
Brighton Pier - Survey for Boat Deck Replacement
Brighton Pier is a Grade II* listed building which opened in 1899. The pier head comprises structure from three distinct periods. The central core is constructed of Victorian cast iron screw piles while to the northeast corner is an area approximately 35m x 15m known as the boat deck and built in the 1930s. In the mid-1990s, the pier head was then extended, with a new structure surrounding the original construction.
Skærbæk, LPG Loading Jetty - Location study and conceptual layout
DONG Oil Pipe A/S intends to establish a new LPG loading facility in Port of Skærbæk. The LPG is a byproduct from the process of stabilizing incoming "live crude oil" from the Danish North Sea offshore oil fields.
Birmingham Post & Mail Redevelopment
The Post & Mail development regenerated a decommissioned newspaper production and distribution building in the centre of Birmingham, converting it into a new 23-storey mixed-use building including a 6-storey basement car park.
Shinfield Eastern Relief Road, M4 overbridge
Shinfield Eastern Relief Road (ERR) forms part of a scheme that will relieve congestion in the village of Shinfield in Berkshire, and also provide access to land for development of new housing and a science park for the University of Reading.
A380 South Devon Highway
The South Devon Link Road Project was one of the biggest construction projects and one of the most complex highways schemes in the South West. Involving many partners and engineering challenges, the project has received awards for considerate practices that show respect to the community and the environment.
A487 Bangor to Fishguard Trunk Road Improvement at Glandyfi
Glandyfi Junction on the A487 coastal trunk road runs through one of Wales’ most scenic areas, but its narrow bends made it a notorious bottleneck and accident blackspot. This improvement scheme involved widening and straightening a 1.3km stretch of the road beside the Afon Dyfi estuary, close to the Snowdonia National Park.
Parkside Building - Birmingham City University
The BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rated Parkside Building provides a new centre of excellence for Birmingham City University to support the full range of Arts, Design and Media courses.
RAF Akrotiri - Refurbishment of airfield operating surface and airfield ground lighting
RAF Akrotiri is a busy British military airfield situated on the Akrotiri Peninsular on the South coast of Cyprus. The Base provides joint support to British Forces Cyprus and Operations in the region in order to protect the UK's strategic interests.
Bankside 123
On an island site next to London's Tate Modern, two 1960s office blocks were demolished to make way for a landmark development. The three buildings of Bankside 123 provide 70,000 sq m of high specification office space, with retail and leisure facilities at ground floor level. Bankside 1, the first to be completed, is the largest, providing approximately half the development's total indoor area.Our involvement from the earliest stages of feasibility planning helped de-risk the project and maximize commercial viability. We used 3D modelling to map out a forest of existing mini-piles that congest the site. This informed a successful foundation design which incorporates 52m deep piles and a waterproof basement wall that doubles as support for the superstructure. Plunge columns were sunk directly into the piles to facilitate top-down construction. This shaved two months off the construction programme, delivering potential extra rental income of £2 million.We ensured that the scheme design could accommodate a steel frame or flat slab construction, increasing the scope of competition at tender stage. The concrete frame chosen was the best value solution.
The Maxwell Centre
The £26 million Maxwell Centre is the latest science facility that Ramboll have been involved in for the University of Cambridge. The doubly-curved four storey steel structure provides a new home for “blue skies” physics research and industrial collaboration.
Dover Western Dock Revival
The revival of the Western Docks is the Port of Dover’s flagship development project and the £230m marine structures and bridge contract is the single biggest investment ever undertaken by the Port. Ramboll has been appointed as designer for the marine civil engineering stage.
DLR three car enhancement
Docklands Light Railway has expanded its network to carry three car trains.
Shatin to Central Link
The North South Line Cross Harbour Tunnel is a 1.7 km immersed tunnel crossing the Victoria harbour in Hong Kong. Ramboll undertakes the role to be the Independent Geotechnical Expert Advice (the ‘expert Reviewer’) for the Immersed tunnel.
A31 Magherafelt bypass between Castledawson and Moneymore
The new bypass on the A31 loops around the town of Magherafelt in Northern Ireland, and is expected to ease congestion in the town by as many as 50,000 vehicles a week, reducing journey times on a major route. Ramboll contributed highway, structures and geotechnical design, environmental co-ordination (including landscape design and assessment of alternative designs) and site supervision.
Jorf Lasfar
Ramboll’s detailed design for a major upgrade of Morocco’s Jorf Lasfar facilities is being implemented while the port remains operational.
Urban Mediaspace Aarhus - Groundbreaking harbour and city environment with innovative multimedia centre
Urban Mediaspace Aarhus is the largest construction project in the history of the Municipality of Aarhus. The project transforms the industrial port environment to a new and lively city environment, creating a dynamic correlation between the city and the waterfront.
Kvanefjeld Port Feasibility Study
Greenland Minerals and Energy Ltd (GMEL) intend to establish a new port as part of an integrated Concentrator and Refinery facility in Kvanefjeld, Greenland, for the Kvanefjeld Rare Earth and Uranium Project. Ramboll has covered the port and logistics part of the total project and prepared a Port Feasibility Study, which demonstrates the technical feasibility of the future Kvanefjeld Port.
M1 motorway widening (J25-28)
Involving the upgrade of the motorway network through widening of existing three lane carriageway to four lanes over a length of 25km, this Highways Agency Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract was the first where the target cost came in below scheme budget. It is also notable for being the first UK motorway widening scheme to be constructed using a moveable steel barrier traffic management system instead of a contra flow.
Design and supervision of the Lusaka - Mongu road redevelopment
The road from Lusaka to Mongu is a vital connection to the western part of Zambia as well as to the Angolan border. The redevelopment of the road has led to considerable savings in time and transport costs.
Norra Länken
To reduce congestion and to minimise the heavy traffic in the centre of Stockholm, it was decided to build the Norra länken: a five kilometre road around part of the centre of Stockholm, three kilometres of which will be in tunnels.
Queensferry Crossing
The Queensferry Crossing sits within a beautiful bridge-scape representing three centuries of bridge innovation. It is the UK’s tallest bridge and the world’s longest three-tower, cable-stayed bridge.
Groundwater mapping - protecting our most valuable resource
As a leading consultant in water and environment Ramboll has carried out a large portion of the Danish National Groundwater Mapping Programme which comprises multidisciplinary hydrogeological projects.
Climate Adaptation and Design of New Provincial Wharf
The Alotau provincial wharf (Ports and Marine), built in 1968, is located in a readily accessible location in Sanderson Bay at the northern head of Milne Bay. Ramboll Ports and Marine was part of a consortium that won an assignment financed by Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Fitzroy Place
Fitzroy place is the most significant new development in Fitzrovia in over 50 years. This mixed use scheme includes almost 300 homes in three in situ concrete framed buildings, as well as 210,000 sq. ft. of offices and 21,000 sq. ft. of restaurants and shops in two steel framed buildings, encompassing some of the most desirable residences and commercial premises in London.
Lights on at new large Baltic port
The Port of Helsinki officially opened the new cargo port at Vuosaari, Helsinki on 28 November 2008, which Ramboll helped realise. Finland’s new main port offers efficient transport with frequent shipping services to Central European ports as well as direct connections to the entire Finnish main road and railway network.
Ormiston Academies Trust aiming for zero carbon emissions
Ramboll is working with the contractor Balfour Beatty, under a design & build contract, to deliver five school projects in the UK counties of Essex and Norfolk.
E18 motorway extension from Koskenkylä to Kotka in Finland
Within Finland, Sweden and Norway in particular, Ramboll has been extensively involved in the establishment of the Nordic Triangle transport corridor, part of EU’s TEN-T road network, linking this region closer to the rest of Europe and beyond. As a part of the Nordic Triangle transport corridor, the E18 stretches all the way across southern Finland from Turku via the Helsinki metropolitan area to Vaalimaa at the Russian border providing a fast route to Eastern markets. Leading the consulting consortium in charge of construction design, Ramboll plays a central role in the E18 motorway extension from Koskenkylä to Kotka.

A world-class physics research and teaching development featuring including technical spaces for superconducting magnets and lasers and extensive cleanrooms. Future flexibility and expansion were key aspects of the client brief, along with high sustainable credentials with the building on target to achieve Breeam Excellent.
Paving the way – from pollution to sustainable recycling of oil shale ash
The purpose of this project is to show that it is possible to convert deposited and newly generated Oil Shale Ash (OSA) into valuable secondary materials for civil-engineering applications. This efficient and waste-free use of oil shale would reduce its impact on the environment while also generating economic benefits.
Cirkelbroen: Masterfully designed bridge connects Copenhagen
Designed by award-winning artist Olafur Eliasson, Cirkelbroen enables walkers and cyclists to cross Christianshavns Kanal in stylish fashion. The bridge smoothly swings open to allow large vessels to pass.
Tripla blocks in Central Pasila, Helsinki
The three-block complex forms an urban centre that includes a shopping centre, the Mall of Tripla, railway station, hotel, working, living, housing and leisure-time activities.
A605 Kings Dyke Improvement Scheme
The problem of road congestion on the A605 road, resulting from increased rail traffic through the Kings Dyke level crossing, needed an ambitious diversion scheme that involved a new road and bridge, rail works, ground works and landscaping.

Hastings Pier Conservation
The much loved Victorian pleasure pier at Hastings has risen like a phoenix following decades of abuse, thanks to a group of local people and funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Ramboll played a key role in the restoration and regeneration of Hastings Pier, offering strategic advice to both the Pier Trust and Hastings Borough Council.
Bacoor Coastal Town and Science Park, Urban & Transport Planning and Design Services
Private developer, Frabelle Group, planned the establishment of a large land reclamation project (420 ha) in Manila Bay (Bacoor Bay) for a new urban development.
Doha Metro Green Line Underground
As part of an ambitious plan to develop a railway based public transport in Doha, Qatar Railways Rail appointed a Joint Venture comprising PORR, the Saudi Binladin Group and HBK Contracting for the design and construction of Green Line Underground.
E39 Mandal Øst, European Highway
In Mandal, Norway, the construction of the 13 km European Highway E39 is now complete.
E18 Grimstad - Kristiansand, European Highway
Ramboll was engaged as the main consultant on the stretch of the new E18 motorway between Grimstad and Kristiansand. The new motorway will significantly improve the Norwegian infrastructure and will improve living conditions for local communities living along the existing road.
Gullbergsvass and Gothenburg’s new RiverCity
Gullbergsvass is one of seven neighbourhoods in central Gothenburg’s port area to be transformed into the attractive new ‘RiverCity’. Ramboll performed a feasibility study for the 90 hectare district as a basis for stakeholder dialogue on the development. RiverCity promises to position Gothenburg as one of the top five cities in Europe for growth potential.
The Stockholm City Line: Efficient travel across the city
Ramboll is giving expert advice in how to build a railway tunnel, and how to improve the punctuality and the frequency of future rail traffic in Stockholm.
Khalifa University Extension Phase 1
The Khalifa University Extension Phase 1 Project will add an additional area of 120,000 sqm to the existing 34,500 sqm of the current campus. Ramboll provided multidisciplinary services for extension.
RNLI Coventina - All-weather Lifeboat Centre (ALC)
The All-weather Lifeboat Centre (ALC) at the RNLI Headquarters, Poole is a modern life boat manufacturing facility that has secured the charity’s lifeboat building supply chain for the next 30 years.
M25 Cobham Motorway Service Area
Ramboll was lead engineer for Cobham Motorway Service Area, a 20ha development on an environmentally sensitive greenfield site.
The Mersey Gateway
It is a new six-lane cable-stayed tolled bridge across the Mersey Estuary between Runcorn and Widnes. The central feature of the significant highway improvements between the M56 and Speke Road.
Upgrading of the Ringsted-Fehmarn Railway Line
As part of the Fehmarn Belt tunnel project, the 110 km railway line between Ringsted and the Fehmarn-link in Rødby will undergo a comprehensive upgrade. The project includes raising the speed limit to 200 km/h and expansion from single to double track between Vordingborg and Rødby. Existing railway stations will be rebuilt and a new station will be built in Holeby. All of this in order to ensure a quick and efficient transportation of cargo and passengers to Germany.
The Øresund Link
The Øresund Link connects the Danish capital Copenhagen with the city of Malmö in southern Sweden by a four lane motorway and a two track electrified railway for high speed (200 km/h) passenger services as well as freight trains.
New Northzealand Hospital
The one of a kind new Northzealand hospital in Hillerød, Denmark seeks to reinvent hospital designs for the future. Following a 12-month intensive international design competition, the Architectural consortium of Herzog & de Meuron/Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter was awarded the contract, with Ramboll named as the engineering consultant, providing a full range of engineering services.

Niels Bohr
Named after the world famous scientist and 1922 Nobel prize winner, the Niels Bohr Building will be a world leading research and teaching facility. The building is designed to embrace collaboration and knowledge sharing whilst encompassing some of the most advanced facilities with state of the engineering support e.g. vibrations, air quality and flow, electromagnetic shielding, clean rooms etc. NBB will become a vibrant hotspot for natural sciences to attract internationally acclaimed scientists.
Fehmarnbelt between Denmark and Germany
In the future Scandinavia and the rest of Europe will be connected by the world's longest road and rail tunnel.
Nordhavnsvej – the largest road construction project in Copenhagen in 50 years
The project for “Nordhavnsvej” is the first stage of a new road to Copenhagen’s Nordhavn (North Harbour). When fully developed, the urban area is planned for 40,000 residents and 40,000 workplaces.
