Middelfart city hall – sustainable from the get-go

Tyntesfield restoration works

Grade I listed Tyntesfield is a Gothic Revival house with an estate, and was acquired by the National Trust in 2002. The house was designed by John Norton, a close friend of Augustus Pugin, and dates from 1863. Following the success of the project's Heritage Lottery Fund bid, we were appointed to provide building services consultancy and advise on sustainability as part of a £20m restoration project and a wider estate masterplan.The original interiors have survived virtually intact and in the installation of new services, the work has been done sympathetically within the original building fabric, with discrete routing planned in advance of all works and minimal impact on existing finishes.The electrical services for the whole house have been replaced, and environmen ...

Centre for Engineering & Manufacturing Excellence (CEME)

This state-of-the-art centre for training and education is one of a growing international series part-funded by Ford Motors. In Dagenham, the company's concept combined perfectly with plans for regeneration following the closure of the local motor works: the CEME development is the first landmark building to be completed in the area. Our services engineering brief emphasized design excellence and meaningful long term investment as reflecting the core principles of the project.CEME's main building is a faceted glass and steel construction, curved in plan. King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Centre (KAPSARC)

Ramboll is advising on one of the first LEED Platinum developments in the Middle East King Abdullah Petroleum Studies & Research Center (KAPSARC) is a community development comprising a research centre, community facilities and single family residential buildings in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The community facilities, with seven buildings, are pursuing LEED Platinum under the LEED NC for Multiple Buildings, making it one of the first developments targeting this rating in the Middle East. In addition, the single family residential development of 200 residential buildings is targeting a Platinum rating under the LEED for Homes, the first project to attempt this outside of North America. The project adopts sustainable design and construction practices from the concept stage to achieve the Platinum certification and to reduce the carbon footprint of the project from a life cycle perspective. The project introduces multiple on-site renewable energy systems and water saving strategies. In addition, the project limits site disturbance through considerate design and the implementation of a construction activities management plan. The project also promotes biodiversity through ecology rehabilitation.

Building Schools for the Future, Manchester

Eight secondary school premises are being built or refurbished under the Future Manchester framework — part of the Government’s massive UK-wide schools replacement programme, Building Schools for the Future.We’ve worked on building services design to be replicated — with modifications — across all eight schools. An important area of focus has been the precise control of CO2 levels in line with BB101, together with a wider agenda for reduced energy use.Our solution involves a streamlined mechanical ventilation system in which an air handling unit is positioned at ceiling level in every classroom. M40 motorway services area

We are providing structural, infrastructure and building services engineering design for a new motorway services area on the M40 at Beaconsfield. The development incudes a petrol station, an amenities building and overnight accommodation.The site covers 6.4 hectares and is located in an environmentally sensitive area. It is surrounded by ancient woodland and near various significant structures, including a Roman road and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Strømsø as a future-oriented city district

Ramboll engineers and DRMA Architects submitted the proposal ‘Norway in the future’ which was awarded second place in the idea competition for the future development of the Strømsø district. The aim was to get creative input for how the area may be turned into a future-oriented and human friendly city environment with reduced demands for transport and minimal emissions of climate gasses.

Upton site C residences

The homes of tomorrow

A new type of houses is emerging in the wake of the focus on climate change and energy costs. These so called passive houses are seen as the solution to the challenging task to drastically reducing energy consumption in buildings.

Two test centres for Vestas Blades

Ev0 building: Realising UK’s net-zero carbon vision for workspaces

The Ev0 building is set to be one of the UK’s lowest carbon office developments, pushing the boundaries of modern design and sustainability goals with truly ultra-low embodied and operational carbon emissions. 

Design and supervision of the Lusaka - Mongu road redevelopment

The road from Lusaka to Mongu is a vital connection to the western part of Zambia as well as to the Angolan border.  The redevelopment of the road has led to considerable savings in time and transport costs.

Tradewinds residential

The Tradewinds development at Marina Bay, on Gibraltar’s west coast, south of the airport runway, has 81 apartments in three linked towers of up to 16 storeys. Underground car parking and retail outlets occupy the lower levels. The structural design uses an in situ concrete frame with flat unbonded post-tensioned floors — thought to be a first for Gibraltar — allowing the inclusion of an additional storey within the building height restrictions. Our engineers also undertook wind and environmental modelling.The towers are built around a swimming pool set back from the water’s edge, and have sloping roofs that increase in height from eight to 16 storeys, north to south. A veil of shallow flow-steps create a rhythmic surface of shimmering waves, providing multiple opportunities for people to cross and interact with the water. Ramboll was appointed as the Lead Consultant to provide fully multi-disciplinary architectural and engineering design services for the extension of existing facilities of Dubai Cable Company (Ducab) in Jebel Ali, Dubai.

A major multi-phased residential and retail development revitalising Canning Town. Constrained by major roads and properties and up to 21 storeys high, the 650 unit award-winning scheme presented numerous engineering challenges requiring creative and innovative solutions.

Tynemouth Railway Station

Grade II* listed Tynemouth Railway Station has undergone extensive refurbishment to preserve its elegant canopy roof and enable its redevelopment as a community venue.

Ormiston Academies Trust aiming for zero carbon emissions

Ramboll is working with the contractor Balfour Beatty, under a design & build contract, to deliver five school projects in the UK counties of Essex and Norfolk.

Nandian Park City

Nandian Park City is located in Tianjin, one of the largest cities in China. The masterplan for this 10 km2 new city district convinced the jury to choose this plan thanks to the outstanding high-density corniche which is based on a functional water system for the entire district.

Akbulak Club Resort

Akbulak Club Resort is a luxury leisure complex resort located in the south east of Kazakhstan, approximately 50km east of the former capital Almaty. The proposed development is laid over 980 hectares on a greenfield site, located at the foothills of the Tian Shan mountain range, which separates Kazakhstan and China. Assessments, provided by Ramboll, included information that could be used to forecast costs, enabling our client to consider possible phasing options.

Creek Towers and Plaza

A five tower office complex surrounding a central plaza in the world’s first maritime business centre.  The first ever purpose-built maritime center in the world, Dubai maritime city, will serve as an international hub for maritime business.

Crouch Hill Park

Proposals at Crouch Hill Park involved the relocation of Ashmount Primary School, Bowler’s Nursery and the renovation of the community CAPE building. The brief is challenging as the site is Metropolitan Open Land. Sustainability, energy and landscaping have all been integral to design development. Designs are based on a ‘tree house’ concept to connect with the surrounding environment.

The Blade

Sensitivity is required on this project to build an eight storey residential building and a fourteen storey commercial high-rise on an historic site which once housed a mill complex run by Benedictine monks. Care was taken during demolition to preserve a medieval arch, which has been awarded scheduled monument status...

The Great Northern Hotel Refurbishment

The worlds first great railway hotel first built in 1854. Complete refurbishment with extraordinary spatial constraints around the existing Grade 2 masonry structure and cantilevered stone stair cores also sustainable servicing requirements for the plant and distribution systems.

The new North Zealand Hospital

The new North Zealand Hospital rethinks previous hospital designs, increasing the focus on social, economic and environmental sustainability. The 115, 000 sqm hospital is based on a vision of the healing architecture.

Hastings Pier Conservation

The much loved Victorian pleasure pier at Hastings has risen like a phoenix following decades of abuse, thanks to a group of local people and funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Helix-London development

Two elliptical residential towers of different heights sit above a two storey podium in this mixed use development in London's Canary Wharf. One of Europe's largest McDonald's restaurants has been demolished to make way for it.The concrete frame towers, one 28 storeys high and the other 35 storeys, are linked by spaghetti-like steel bridges. Each floor has a wrap-around balcony with views to the nearby marina. Manchester New Square

An exciting new residential regeneration site located within the heart of Manchester. The three individually designed 12-15 storey buildings, set around a landscaped and vibrant square, comprises 351 apartments. Beneath the development lies the deepest basement in Manchester, providing four storeys of car parking facilities and plant space.

The Makers District, UAE

Will become one of Abu Dhabi’s most iconic and vibrant residential communities. The team were challenged to construct a development that excels in liveability, cost-efficiency and simultaneously corresponds to the Estidama sustainability initiative. The first phase comprises of 13 different buildings ranging from mid to 24 storey high rise and a built-up area of circa 390,000 sqm    

New Northzealand Hospital

The one of a kind new Northzealand hospital in Hillerød, Denmark seeks to reinvent hospital designs for the future. Following a 12-month intensive international design competition, the Architectural consortium of Herzog & de Meuron/Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter was awarded the contract, with Ramboll named as the engineering consultant, providing a full range of engineering services. 

Carlsberg City

Site 8 is the first major building of the Carlsberg city development complex in central Copenhagen. The complex is more than 100, 000 sq m and combines the teaching facilities of the UCC university with retail, office and residential uses. Niels Bohr

Nordhavnsvej – the largest road construction project in Copenhagen in 50 years

The project for “Nordhavnsvej” is the first stage of a new road to Copenhagen’s Nordhavn (North Harbour). When fully developed, the urban area is planned for 40,000 residents and 40,000 workplaces.
