Vatnsmyri Airport masterplan

Vatnsmyri is an area of 150 hectares located in the heart of Reykjavik, Iceland. It is the last plot of undeveloped land on Reykjavik's narrow peninsula and is occupied by the domestic airport. To retain its historical centre and remain a competitor in the global market, the city has to expand.

We helped the architect submit a winning bid for the creation of a comprehensive regeneration strategy, relocating the airport to the site of the international airport in Keflavik and releasing the land to create a new civic centre and residential district.

Sustainability is key to the project. Ambitious plans to exploit the city's volcanic positioning require intelligent use of sustainable solutions. Our engineers have provided assessments of geothermal energy, which would be used to generate electricity and supply piped hot water to the new district. Our proposal for generating all power on site includes plans for wind generation and wave power.

Central to the design is a sustainable drainage system. Rainwater collects in an attenuation lake, which discharges into the sea. Our transport solution includes provisions for a public transport network and a new road infrastructure.
