Devil’s Tower Camp is a British military base on the east coast of Gibraltar, and is home to various armed forces including the Royal Gibraltar Regiment. To improve the site’s transit, permanent and welfare facilities, the single living accommodation has been refurbished to provide 400 bed spaces, and a new catering complex has been built to serve 450 personnel. We provided civil, structural and building services engineering, and project management, monitoring and defects liability services.
Existing buildings have been reconfigured, and extensive refurbishment has resulted in the provision of 160 single-occupancy en-suite rooms for permanent accommodation — 30 for senior ranks and 130 for junior ranks. Other remodelled accommodation includes four-person transit pods, disabled bed spaces, a visiting-family room, communal spaces and ablution facilities.
The refurbishment extends to support offices, welfare facilities, a Navy Army Air Force Institute (NAAFI) shop, plus mess facilities, bar and function room for senior ranks, and dining room and bar for junior ranks. The new centrally located catering complex has a dining room for senior ranks and a servery for junior ranks.
All work, which took place within the existing building footprint, complies with the Ministry of Defence Joint Services Publication 315 criteria for senior and other ranks’ accommodation, as well as with current British Standards. Noise reduction, working hours, health and safety, and site security have been of paramount importance.
The living accommodation remained in use during the contract, with units occupied on either side of construction area. All services and catering facilities were also maintained throughout the project.
