The brand new, £15m Oldham Leisure Centre is set to place the area on the national sporting map, providing state of the art competition level facilities for several sports including swimming, handball, boxing and basketball.
Located on the main approach to Oldham, Manchester, the landmark building is a significant step in the council’s drive to promote growth and regeneration in the area.
The main sports hall within the centre is designed to Sport England requirements, while the swimming pools offer users an 8 lane 25m pool of county level standard and an adjacent learner pool. Within the main building there are facilities providing an indoor bowls hall and large dance and fitness studios, ensuring a lasting Olympic legacy for the vicinity.
The structure of the leisure centre is built over previously worked and remediated coal seams and is supported by bored piles. Ramboll opted for a steel frame comprising of both composite and metal deck floors and precast floors, ensuring that the best overall structural solution to the project’s needs was provided. We also used the combination of roof top plant equipment and discrete plantrooms on each floor level to provide integrated mechanical ventilation to critical large and small volume areas.
Ramboll provided Civil, Structural and Building Services engineering within an integrated design team working alongside the Council and Contractor lead project team to deliver a value for money facility that was officially opened in January 2016.
