Services we provided

The people of London's North Fulham have responded enthusiastically to the revitalization of a 60-year old local park. First established on the site of bomb-damaged streets deemed too costly to repair after WWII, Normand Park had been little altered over the years.

Consultation for the regeneration of the area, begun in 2001, revealed a powerful desire in the community to make better use of this public asset. The refurbished park is designed to provide something for every sector of society: young children and parents, teenagers, older citizens, residents and visitors.

Ramboll UK was lead consultant on the project and the work of our masterplanning & urban development team played an important role throughout. Intensive community liaison was integral to our work, involving residents, Friends of Normand Park and the local New Deal for Communities team. Specific design responsibilities included drainage, pavement foundation design, street furniture, irrigation and water supply. High quality of finish, durability and sustainability in design and execution were all client priorities.

The removal of legacy structures — walls, fences and portacabins — opened up the 2.7 ha area for reconfiguration. Re-designed pathways such as the decoratively themed Broadwalk and a meandering Play Path facilitate pedestrian traffic. We engineered bespoke furnishings including vandal-resistant, in situ concrete benches, perforated concrete walls and a public climbing wall. In the community garden, sheet piles retain raised beds that enable wheelchair users to garden, too.

The 12,500 litre rainwater harvesting system was designed and introduced by Ramboll. Water is collected from the roof of a fitness centre adjacent to the park, filtered and redistributed through the irrigation system and to supply new water features. A mains backup is included in case of low rainfall.

Other amenities include play equipment, areas for performance and for BMX biking, a sports pitch, a cafe, toilets and an office for the specially-assigned park warden, new plantings throughout and aesthetic lights that illuminate the park at nightfall.
