The New School in London's Haringey is the first new school to be built in the borough since the 1960s. It provides teaching accommodation and facilities for more than 1,000 pupils. Included in the scheme are 60 new classrooms, a sports hall, an assembly space, a cafeteria and kitchen, and science laboratories. The building is designed to be an exemplar sustainable school and to achieve a BREEAM 'excellent' rating.

The location of the site adjacent to a main railway line led to the need for mechanical ventilation throughout the building. In addition, the high level of IT installations has meant the installation of cooling to most of the classrooms.

The design of the school incorporates a number of low-carbon and sustainability features. These include the provision of a ground source heat pump for heating and chilled water, wind turbines for demonstration purposes, 450 sq m of roof-mounted photovoltaic cells for electricity, solar shading and high levels of insulation.

The building meets both Greater London Authority requirements for 20% renewable energy in its power use, and the government target of 60% carbon reduction below the 2002 Building Regulations.
