Plans for Liverpool’s new permanent Cruise Terminal will replace the existing facility to create an exciting five-star experience for passengers. Ramboll is leading a multi-disciplinary technical team designing the new terminal and will stay involved until Scheme completion.
An important regeneration project for Liverpool
Liverpool is a major destination in the booming global cruise industry and the current terminal generates more than £7m a year to the city’s economy. In 2017 the city welcomed more than 60 vessels, with 120,000 passengers and crew for lines such as Cunard, Celebrity, Princess and Silversea.
To enhance the city’s capabilities in handling the next generation of turnaround cruise ships, which can carry up to 3,600 passengers, Liverpool City Council wants to create a state of the art passenger and baggage facility, complete with passport control, lounge, café, toilets, taxi rank and vehicle pick up point. A new landmark terminal building will be suspended on a deck over the river.
Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, said: “A new cruise facility is one of the city’s most important regeneration projects of this decade and is vital to growing Liverpool’s tourism economy.”
Ramboll appointed as the Technical Lead Advisor
In May 2017 Liverpool City Council appointed Ramboll to lead a highly skilled technical team to create an “international standard”, new permanent Cruise Terminal Facility on the River Mersey.
The multi-disciplinary design team was appointed after a European wide tendering process, and includes: architects Stride Treglown, cost managers Gardiner & Theobald, global planning and property consultants JLL, and landscape architects Hyland Edgar Driver.
The team initially worked up detailed designs for the planning application, which were based on already completed feasibility studies, and the plans were submitted in November 2017.
Ramboll’s role is to provide design services, to assist with the procurement of a contractor and to project manage and assist with the ongoing monitoring of the construction of the new facility.
The Ramboll team will be drawing on over 20 years’ experience of working on cruise liner terminals in the UK, and over 30 years of experience in marine structure design. They also bring unparalleled local knowledge through their work over the previous 16 years in developing both Liverpool’s Princes Dock and the surrounding area; including the existing Liverpool cruise liner terminal.
Plans subject to approvals
Subject to approvals, plans for the new £60m Mersey Cruise Terminal will replace the existing cruise terminal locating on the former Princes Jetty at Princes Dock in Liverpool Waters.
Further applications are likely to include associated projects like a new 200 room hotel and 1,100 space multi-storey car park.
