The original façade of a listed Georgian townhouse was the ideal choice for this flagship store but the interior required extensive work. Our client wanted to increase floor space while creating cleaner lines. We employed structural modifications to open up the front of the four-storey building.
To reconfigure the space, we removed a non-structural partition wall between the single storey rear extension and a 1930s extension featuring circular roof lights. We installed glass walls to create an external courtyard space. The extension's Victorian lantern light was retained. Floors throughout were strengthened and improved to take the weight of limestone slabs and retail fittings. At a higher level we rebuilt the third floor and stripped the roof back to its bare structure, which was then re-clad. Engineering solutions were provided for a myriad of services to be threaded through the timber floors, including air-conditioning.
Donna Karan's sculptural look was achieved with black polished plaster and bronze clad fitting rooms. The refurbishment was completed within six months.
