Centre for Engineering & Manufacturing Excellence (CEME)

This state-of-the-art centre for training and education is one of a growing international series part-funded by Ford Motors. In Dagenham, the company's concept combined perfectly with plans for regeneration following the closure of the local motor works: the CEME development is the first landmark building to be completed in the area. Our services engineering brief emphasized design excellence and meaningful long-term investment as reflecting the core principles of the project.

CEME's main building is a faceted glass and steel construction, curved in plan. It houses double-height workshops on the north side, a two-storey strip of offices and workshops down the centre and, to the south, a glazed internal street facing onto a man-made lake.

Plant is neatly located within a dedicated corridor under the spine of the roof, minimizing its visual impact and helping to streamline construction. The 3MW boiler plant room was fabricated off site so as not to interfere with access to the roof works, then delivered as two 3.5m x 11m fully commissioned units. These were slotted into place in a single day by four men and a 300 ton crane.

We assessed site-wide renewable energy opportunities to develop building systems that minimize additional energy input. This led to the installation of a 115kW PV array on the roof, for which we obtained significant funding from the DTI, supplemented by the EC's UnivERsol project. Automatic louvres to the street and an air displacement system beneath the office floors make full use of natural ventilation. Using daylight analysis calculations, we arrived at the optimum angle for fixed wood shading panels along the south elevation.
