Foster + Partners' design of the building was originally based on the interlocking shells of a prawn. The two steps of the building help it relate more easily to the surrounding buildings.

51 Lime Street, London

This high rise building, also called the Willis Building, was designed by the British architect Foster + Partners. It is a significant addition to the London skyline, becoming the fourth tallest building in the City after Tower 42, 30 St Mary Axe and CityPoint.

Ramboll delivered the structural design and construction of 51 Lime Street, created by the British architect Foster + Partners. This office development, providing London with 50,000 m2 of new office space, consists of two towers linked by a double storey basement. The existing basement has been re-used to house an auditorium and gymnasium as well as car-parking. Each of the towers has a central core that is sufficiently robust to provide interior space that is completely column-free. The largest tower is 29 storeys tall and is stepped back to create terraces at two levels.

The building is designed to reduce water consumption by 30%, resulting in a daily water use of less than 20L per full time employee. This is being achieved through a number of measures, including rain water collection.
