Horns Rev 2 is an offshore wind farm located on Horns Rev (Horns Reef) in the eastern North Sea, about 30 km off the Danish coast.

Impressive wind farm with accommodation facilities

When inaugurated in 2009, DONG Energy's Horns Rev 2 was the largest offshore wind farm in the world until Thanet Wind Farm opened on 23 September 2010.

Horns Rev 2 consists of 91 Siemens Wind Power SWP 2.3-93 wind turbines with a total generating capacity of 209 MW. It was the first offshore wind farm to have an accommodation platform. The accommodation platform is connected by walkway to the nearby substation platform, owned and operated by Energinet.dk – the owner of the Danish electricity transmission system.

Transformer facilities at 13 m water depth

In 2006 Ramboll carried out the conceptual design of the substation for client Energinet.dk. The contract included initial layout, conceptual design and preparation of complete design documentation for the tender package covering both jacket and topside.

The substation was designed to carry equipment for high-voltage transmission and distribution as well as other facilities such as diesel generators, batteries and panels for wind turbine control. The platform consists of a steel topside installed on a four legged steel jacket supported by piles. The water depth at the substation location is approx. 13 m.

The topside has the following main components:

  • Main transformer 150kV/36kV
  • HV switchgear 170 kV & MV switchgear 36 kV
  • Auxiliary transformers, LV switchgear, DC batteries, Diesel generator skid and diesel oil tank , oil sump tank
  • Workshop and storage area, Emergency shelter, locker rooms, toilet facilities and server & communication room
  • Deluge system, Crane, Boat landings for wind farm service boats & boat landing for supply boat.

Grid connection completed in 2009

The grid connection was completed in May 2009 via a 42 km submarine cable from the platform to shore.
