Ramboll was awarded a feasibility study in joint venture with Gazoprojekt, and Ernst & Young as sub-consultants, to provide socioeconomic, financial and technical foundation for the prospective Baltic Pipe implementation.

Strategic partnership

The Baltic Pipe project outlines the initiative at interconnecting the Danish and Polish gas markets to reinforce the security of supply through diversification and increased competitiveness.

The interconnection of the two gas markets was initiated by Polish operator GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. and Energinet.dk, a non-profit enterprise owned by the Danish Ministry of Energy, responsible for supplying Denmark with electricity and natural gas.

Establishing viable solutions

The aim of the feasibility study was to provide comprehensive assessment for the project’s viability by analysing its socioeconomic, financial and technical rationale.

Based on assessment of the regional markets’ development and commercial potential a market model was proposed in order to secure an efficient use of the Baltic Pipe’s technical capacity.

The technical evaluation focused on providing detailed description of various alternatives for the pipeline system, both onshore and offshore and recommendations on the technical concept design of suitable pipe configurations, cost estimates and route mapping for environmental impact assessment (EIA).

One of EU’s projects of common interest

Following ongoing project work for more than a decade, the Baltic Pipe project became essential to the European internal energy market and was ultimately included on EU’s projects of common interest (PCI).
“Establishing the viability of the project is a significant step towards a common goal of providing affordable, secure and sustainable energy among the citizens of the Nordic and Central Eastern European community”, says Sofie Leweson, Project Manager, Energinet .dk.

GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. and Energinet.dk have recognised the offer from Ramboll and Gazoprojekt as the most reasonable and economically advantageous based on the evaluation of the selection criteria. Both TSO's are expecting high quality analyses as well as successful partnership with the consultants.
