If you get lost below deck on your next boat cruise and stray into the engine room, there's a pretty decent chance that you'll be looking at a powerful engine from MAN Energy Solutions. When it comes to large diesel engines for use in ships and power stations, German-based MAN Energy Solutions is a global market leader. The multinational company employs around 14,000 staff in more than 100 countries, and it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that a setup like this, demands more than a little something from the management.
Successful leaders face interesting job offers
Since 2008, Ramboll Management Consulting has assisted leaders at the head office in Augsburg, Germany as well as local departments in Hong Kong and the United States. A comprehensive leadership programme has been unfolded to develop current leaders of MAN Energy Solutions and create a widespread understanding of 'leadership' as a term within the company, across borders and cultures.
"Our program is a part of the systematic development of managers. If participants are successful in our program, they will join the pool of candidates for new and demanding job positions within the company," Project Manager Lars Lentfer says.
"Another crucial point is that good leadership supports being a successful company, and it is the most important factor when it comes to job satisfaction. And satisfied employees are less ill and more motivated."
Through the programme, leaders get to test themselves in classic leadership tasks such as team development, conflict management, and strategy development. To meet increasing demands from the ever-changing and unsettled globalised business world, managers participate in learning sections to develop their skills within change management, coaching and motivation, and recruitment.
Also, a global network has been built among the leaders of the organisation to ensure that they form a shared understanding of what leadership actually means. Participants from 2008 still meet today.
To follow the participants' progress, Ramboll Management Consulting tracks their individual developments. Every manager is asked to make a self-assessment and evaluation of his or her competences. Meanwhile, colleagues also evaluate each others' efforts at the end of the course to discover those areas of expertise that need greater attention and more training.
"The results so far show that there's a growing group of managers with a comparable understanding of leadership, sharing the same ideas and values. It's a vivid program where we constantly renew the tools, methods and ways of reflection, while the issues we deal with remain more or less the same," says Lars Lentfer.
To make sure that the leaders actually use the tools and techniques they've picked up, everyone makes a personal masterplan on how to apply their leadership toolbox in their daily work. The all-important ambition is for leaders to get a more nuanced and shared perspective on how to lead in a big business like MAN Energy Solutions.
Four years have passed since the ignition of the programme, and the project is still running from the engine room of MAN Energy Solutions.
MAN Energy Solutions is a part of the Man Group, founded in 1783 and one of the oldest industrial companies in the world. The MAN Group has more than 52,000 employees worldwide.
