Congestion arising from the level crossing is worsening as a result of increasing rail traffic. The nearest alternative vehicle routes are on minor roads, which are prone to flooding.

Works to improve the A605 Kings Dyke railway crossing on the A605 between Whittlesey and Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, will begin this year. The scheme will see a new road and bridge over the Ely to Peterborough railway line crossing at Kings Dyke, and the existing level crossing will be closed. There will also be a new route to the south with new roundabouts at Funtham’s Lane and the brickworks access road.

A detailed six month design process is about to start on the detail of the scheme. The project requires significant earthworks, highway and other structures. Initial works have included interpreting the existing ground investigation (GI) information, undertaking embankment settlement assessments, developing ground improvement options, undertaking retaining wall design and developing proposals for further GI.

Cambridgeshire County Council’s Local Member for Whittlesey South, Councillor David Connor said “I am very pleased that a contractor has been chosen. Local people have been looking for a solution to the problems caused by the level crossing for a long time and it is their wish to see the scheme delivered as quickly and smoothly as possible. It will be a huge benefit to the people of Fenland and further afield.”
