Located on the riverfront in the Nine Elms district between Chelsea Bridge and Vauxhall Bridge in London’s South Bank, Riverlight is a striking array of six high-specification residential blocks varying from 12 to 20 storeys above ground level.

As the development, which has in excess of 750 apartments and retail units welcomes its first residential and commercial residents the Riverside community begins to take shape.

Defining feature

The defining feature of all the buildings within the development is the cantilevered ends that support the apartment terraces. Commissioned to carry out the detail design, Ramboll delivered significant cost savings through the efficient design of the reinforced concrete construction that incorporated external steel bracing features to support the large cantilevered floor slabs at each end of the building. Working closely with the architects and design team, Ramboll’s particular work on the basement and podium levels resulted in a reduced overall depth of the podium and basement that resulted in a significant reduction in contaminated ground removal from the site and enabled a saving of 300 tonnes of reinforcement.

The development of the structural solution for the cantilevered ends was driven by issues of constructability; the final solution using traditional construction techniques in an innovative way, enabling a fast and efficient construction method to be adopted resulting in an expedited construction programme.

State of the art living

Designed by top architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, Riverlight focuses on state of the art living. All the apartments have private terraces providing outstanding views of the River Thames and London skyline and as three quarters of the site are dedicated to outside space the development creates a seamlessly integrated inside and outside living space.

The variety of on-site amenities highlight the level of luxury and include; a restaurant, coffee shop, Sainsburys, a Royal College of Art gallery, gym, swimming pool, holistic spa, exclusive residents’ clubhouse, full digital entertainment suite with private cinema, reading lounge and even virtual golf.
