The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has released time-lapse video of the Cammell Laird construction hall showing progress of the advanced polar research vessel RRS Sir David Attenborough.

New Polar Ship reaches first construction milestone

The new state-of-the-art polar research ship, RRS Sir David Attenborough, reaches its first construction milestonewith the ceremonial laying of the keel.

The footage was shot by Cammell Laird, from October 2016 to December 2017 and includes the integration of the stern section which travelled from A&P in Newcastle, along with the ship's move out of the Construction Hall at the end of 2017.

As of December 2017, 80 of 88 blocks are in progress, accounting for approximately 8,000 tonnes of steel and equipment. The ship is due for completion by October 2018.

Ramboll is Technical Advisor to BAS, working closely with them to prepare for the new vessel and associated projects in the Antarctic and the UK.

The RRS Sir David Attenborough was commissioned by NERC and built by Cammell Laird. The new polar research ship, capable of circling the entire Antarctic continent twice, will allow scientists of British Antarctic Survey greater opportunities for exploration and research with state-of-the-art facilities. Delivering a host of projects within the Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme (AIMP), BAS and its Technical Advisors (including NORR Architects and Turner & Townsend) are preparing for one of the world’s most advanced Polar research ships - the RRS Sir David Attenborough.
