On Saturday over 590 people from 23 construction and engineering firms represented #BuildingEquality at London’s Pride parade, marching alongside the now iconic rainbow JCB provided by Flannery Plant.

The theme of this year’s event was ‘Pride Jubilee’, marking 50 years since the Stonewall Riots which sparked the modern Pride movement. BuildingEquality joined over 600 other parade groups to honour the 50 years of activism, protests and victories that have made Pride what it is today.

This year is the fifth London Pride parade BuildingEquality have attended, growing from 50 marchers from four companies in 2015 to nearly 600 in 2019 with Ramboll joining for the first time in 2018. BuildingEquality continue to drive change, not just through main contractors but also through the supply chain, encouraging an inclusive environment to reduce stress and anxiety amongst LGBTQ+ employees.

London Pride is the second Pride event attended by Ramboll in 2019, having already joined BuildingEquality at Birmingham Pride for the first time. We will also be at Pride events in Southampton and Leeds, encouraging others from across the industry to support their LGBTQ+ colleagues, friends and family.

Ramboll’s Talent and Inclusion Director, Alex Lawrence, was one of many who attended Pride in London, commented:“Joining Ramboll and BuildingEquality at this years London Pride parade was a remarkable experience. With nearly 600 people from across the industry coming together to honour those that fought for LGBTQ+ rights over the past 50 years this shows how far the industry has come and how many people feel the continued quest for LGBTQ+ acceptance without exception is important.

At Ramboll we are committed to treating everybody equally and have made great progress in increasing LGBTQ+ visibility and awareness within the company over the past year, but it is not just a business imperative. I believe events like this are key to creating a better and more accepting society.”

Ramboll celebrates Pride

Our attendance at London’s Pride parade draws to a close our Pride month campaign. Throughout June, Ramboll’s LGBT+ Allies network championed LGBTQ+ history, a diverse and inclusive work environment while offering tips and materials on how to be a better ally.

On Thursday 13 June the first ever Ramboll Pride was held. Offices from across the UK joined together to appreciate the  Stonewall riots and the impact they have had on the modern culture and the prejudices the LGBTQ+ community still face. Various fundraising events were held for Outright Action International who research, document, defend, and advance human rights for LGBT+ people around the world. You can support their work here.

However, Pride is not just a month long campaign. Ramboll’s LGBT+ Allies network work throughout the year to create informative, interesting and inspiring campaigns that increase the visibility and of our LGBTQ+ employees, promote acceptance without exception and drive real change.
