The citizenM hotel, Tower of London has been awarded Urban Hotel (new build) of the year at the Awards of Hospitality Experience & Design (AHEAD). The annual AHEAD awards recognise outstanding design in the hospitality sector across all of Europe. At the award ceremony on 20th November the citizenM hotel, Tower of London was commended for “bringing an exemplary balance of scale, surface texture and respect to its urban context.”
We worked alongside the client and architects Sheppard Robson to realise the plans for the city centre hotel. The site is located within a UNESCO world heritage site, adjacent to London’s historic Tower. Bordering the original Roman City Wall and on top of the busy Tower Hill Underground station, delivering the hotel in tight timescales was a real technical challenge.
Offsite construction was integral to the project. A modular steel solution ensured the nine storeys hotel could be built over the existing station where only five storeys had been possible before. The lightweight design also allowed the use of Portland stone cladding to create a contemporary yet sympathetic exterior to the hotel.
Craig Kinnon, Project Director at citizenM hotels said “We’re thrilled that our new citizenM, Tower of London hotel was awarded best Urban New Build hotel. We engaged Ramboll at the start of the project because we knew they could realise our vision of a world-class contemporary hotel in such a challenging and sensitive location, and that’s exactly what they’ve delivered”
Andrew Lyons, Ramboll’s Buildings Market Director commented “We were delighted to be a part of the design team for this project. It is undoubtedly a significant addition to our hotel portfolio, and is yet another example of offsite construction delivering world-class buildings.”
Tower Hill is a flagship location for CitizenM’s London offer, comprising a 370 bedroom hotel offering “affordable luxury” above Tower Hill underground station, in the setting of a UNESCO World Heritage site.
