It’s been 150 years since Sweden's main rail links were built. Now tracks for a new high-speed rail link will be laid. Ramboll, together with consulting company Atkins, has been commissioned by the Swedish Transport Administration - Trafikverket to plan the route through Linköping.

The train link Ostlänken between Järna and Linköping will be the first phase of a future high-speed network on the Stockholm-Gothenburg and Stockholm-Malmö routes. The rail link will reduce travel times, increase reliability and provide a sustainable option for travelers. Travel times between Stockholm and Malmö will in the future be 2.5 hours and the journey from Stockholm to Gothenburg can be done in 2 hours. The project will take at least five years.

"This is a big step in getting long-term sustainable transport solution for travelers. What makes us extra proud is that we received the highest ratings regarding the framework for delivering the project, that is, we managed to clearly describe how we plan to run and plan the assignment with regard to risks, quality and collaboration," says Anna Forslund, client director at Ramboll.

She continues:

"Together with the Swedish Transport Administration, we will find a good solution for how the railway will run through Linköping and ensure a good interaction with the city of Linköping’s development plans.  Integration with the surrounding environment is an important piece of the puzzle for this project. Together we will make railway history."

Ramboll's and Atkins' assignments include a railway plan including localisation study, environmental impact assessment (EIA), project planning document and documentation for environmental approval through the central parts of Linköping. Atkins, part of SNC-Lavalin, has extensive high-speed rail experience from Europe.

"We hope to bring our company’s experiences to the most important development phase of the Swedish railways in modern times. We are proud of the trust the client Trafikverket has shown us and we are looking forward to achieving the best results in what will be the start of a new Swedish high-speed era network together with Ramboll,"says Mikael Sundholm, business manager for Railway / infrastructure at Atkins.

"Today, we are very happy at Ramboll. The group that has worked with the tender has made a well thought out proposal and we look forward to get started with the work," says Anna Forslund.
