Svein Ove Valset

Graduate civil and structural engineering, Senior Weight & Cost Specialist, Norway

“Meet Svein Ove Valset, who is working as a highly specialised weight engineer at Ramboll Oil & Gas. With 36 years of experience from the oil and gas industry, Svein Ove is a heavyweight within his field of expertise. He developed the software tool MON, which has become one of the cornerstones of our Norwegian business foundation.”

The best of two worlds

'I am dividing my time between Ramboll and one of our main clients, Statoil.  At Ramboll my role is that of in-house expert on MON. MON is used for advanced weight monitoring on offshore projects, as well as platform weight follow-up in the production phase. I use my own practical experience, as well as that of other users, to enhance and develop MON according to new needs and demands.

At Statoil I am responsible for the control of marine conditions and weight of the two floating structures, Snorre A and Snorre B. The main challenge in these two cases is to ensure the structures remain in good condition up until the year 2040. My team records all weight modifications and keeps the weight databases updated. In addition to this we carry out offshore surveys.'

Not just another day at the office

As specialist weight engineer, I'm a central figure within the Statoil project organisation for Snorre. All weight alterations pass my desk at some point. It gives me a chance to interact with the entire organisation, which I greatly enjoy. It also challenges and enhances my multidisciplinary knowledge, which is crucial to understanding the our offshore projects. By now I would say my knowledge is substantial – but it's also always growing.

I also enjoy the variety in my work day. I'm stationed three days a week at Statoil in Stavanger, and two days a week at home in Oslo at the Ramboll office. Working for Statoil I spend time offshore on a regular basis, which has given me a very good understanding of the day-to-day running of the operation. This is definitely something I am able to benefit from when am back at my desk.

I was part of the most amazing offshore project in history

My background is in civil and structural engineering, and I actually ended up in the oil and gas business by chance. I do, however, really enjoy it. My tasks vary greatly, and I have experienced first-hand the development of the Norwegian offshore industry from 1975 to the present day.

The biggest challenge in my professional life was Phillips' 'Jack-Up Project' in 1987. All seven platforms in the Ekofisk centre had their jacket legs extended by six feet due to subsidence. The seven topsides (connected via bridges) were lifted simultaneously while the extension took place. This technical maneuver was – and still is - ground breaking, and is regarded as one of the world's technical wonders.
